Dr. Shakirah Miller
Born in Newark, NJ, Dr. Shakirah Miller completed her elementary education at Hawkins Street Elementary School before receiving a scholarship to attend Blair Academy, a distinguished boarding high school located in Blairstown, NJ. There, she demonstrated her athletic prowess in field hockey, basketball, and track. Following her time at Blair, she commenced her college journey at Lehigh University but ultimately returned home to earn a B.A. in Psychology from Rutgers University-Newark. Driven by her passion for psychology, she pursued further education at Teachers College-Columbia University, obtaining an M.A. in Applied Psychology.
Dr. Miller's teaching career took off in 1999 at Chestnut Hill Academy, an all-boys institution in Philadelphia, PA. Her affection for her hometown led her back to Newark, where she taught mathematics at Luis Munoz Marin Middle School. While continuing her role as a middle school math educator, Dr. Miller also achieved an M.A. in Administration and Supervision from St. Peter’s University. She advanced to the role of Vice Principal at both Barringer High School and Rafael Hernandez Elementary School, and in 2007, she proudly took on the position of Principal at Miller Street School. After dedicating fourteen years to the Newark community, Dr. Miller sought to expand her horizons and became the Principal of Mount Vernon Avenue Elementary School in Irvington, NJ. Subsequently, she was promoted to Interim Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction within Irvington Public Schools. While in Irvington, Dr. Miller achieved her Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Teachers College-Columbia University. Following this, she was given the chance to serve as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at Roselle Public Schools. Eventually, Dr. Miller returned to her roots in Newark, resuming her commitment to the community as the Assistant Superintendent for the South West and East Central School Leadership Teams.
After 25 years of dedicated service, Dr. Miller continues to make an impact. Dr. Miller is a recent retiree who has effectively guided principals and leaders to achieve positive outcomes for both staff and students. Under Dr. Miller’s leadership, 6 out of 9 of her elementary schools improved their student outcomes and were removed from “in need of improvement” status with the state, and 13 of her 14 schools recorded the highest growth and student performance in Math and ELA within the
district.
Dr. Miller is the Founder of JJMP Coaching & Consulting, LLC, where she applies her Advanced Certification in Team Coaching (ACTC) from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), alongside her credentials as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC-ICF), Certified Executive Coach, Certified Diversity Professional, and Board Certified Coach, to help clients advance through transformative leadership and executive coaching.
